Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! And happy Friday – how ‘bout that – two reasons to celebrate today! This week I’ve been busy finishing up this selvage pillow and trying (unsuccessfully) to finish a Valentine’s quilt.
The pillow started as this block, created from the scraps class I took at Quilt Bliss from Amy:
The block was great, but was just a bit too small for the pillow form I had so I knew I needed to add a frame for the block. I pulled these three grays from my stash and auditioned them on instagram. The darker fabric on the right was the clear winner (and it happened to be the one I loved the most), however I didn’t quite have enough. Hawthorne threads came through for me and my needed fabric arrived in just a few short days.
That delicious gray fabric is called Color Weave in Silver by P & B Textiles. Found here.
I kept the quilting to a minimum to let the awesome textures shine. The same Cross Weave fabric is on the back of the pillow as well.
Isn’t it wonderful that something that is meant to be thrown away can be turned into something lovely and useful? I’ve been keeping my selvages for a couple of years now but really only as a type of fabric catalog. As I’m asked about fabrics from older quilts I’ve been able to go back, find the selvage and answer those questions. It’s been so handy! It’s time to put some of these selvages to use though!
I did a quick inventory of my selvage stash and realized that I’ll never use them all. So I’ve stuffed this box full of just some of my selvages and I’d love to send it to someone who can use them! I’ll tuck a few extra goodies in as well. To enter, leave a comment below telling me how you celebrated Valentine’s Day. Giveaway closes Sunday February 23 at midnight. I'll randomly choose a winner Monday the 24th.
****************The giveaway is now closed- thank you!**************

i finally had a date with my husband! our son isn't a year old yet so we don't get out much. dinner, games and a movie. simple but relaxing... thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic pillow! I would love to make one -- I've been saving some selvages but not nearly as many as you have! For Valentines Day I made a special breakfast for my family, and we all exchanged handmade valentines. There is nothing better than a valentine from an 8 year old!!!
ReplyDeleteYour pillow is fabulous and I would just love to have your extra selvedges. I adore selvedges and use them often, I celebrated Valentines's Day by spending time with my husband and he suggested we go to the fabric store to see what I needed to bring home! Best Valentine's Day ever!
ReplyDeleteI'm not good at saving selvedges . . . I'm usually cutting as close as I can to get what I need from the fabric. Would sure be fun to play. I'm being a Valentine scrooge this year and not really celebrating . . . just seemed like one more thing to do this year.
ReplyDeleteI'm spending my Valentine's Day with a head cold and sewing while being with my childcare children. Tonight my hubby works, so we'll eat a little chocolate, then I'll quilt the evening away. I just finished my eighth selvage top for a friend's mom in Italy and have my ninth quilt blocks almost finished. Even though I have tons of selvages, I love them and use them!
ReplyDeleteHi Amy, I'm glad that the same ideas come to the girls in different parts of the world. Thea invite to my blog http://sundutchok.blogspot.com/2014/01/blog-post_25.html
ReplyDeleteI'm spending my Valentine's Day with my 2 boys. We'll be decorating Vday cookies with our neighbor later and then tonight I've got a favorite dinner planned with some surprise goodies for the hubs. Should be fun!

ReplyDeleteWhat a great giveaway! I'm divorced so today is like any other, working then home for dinner :)
ReplyDeleteI am making frosted sugar cookies (heart shaped, of course!). So glad it's not snowing - my daughter and granddaughter are coming over for dinner!
ReplyDeleteThis is the best giveaway ever! I'd love to make a selvedge tote bag - thanks for the chance to win (and thanks for your generosity). Happy Valentine's Day to you!
Love your pillow and would LOVE to have selvages...I've started saving them recently but only have a small handful - just last week I purchased Sunday Morning Quilts and would love to put selvages to use..... Well for Valentines Day - we ended up having a make up snow day due to the tons of snow we've gotten in PA. My husband is out shopping for food to serve an all church luncheon this sunday-he is running this one for the family who normally runs these (but had surgery) Hopefully when he gets home we'll be able to run out for a quick dinner out - but then it will be time for him to plan and prep for Sunday all church dinner and me to gather my sewing belongings so that Saturday I can get together with my sewing friends from church....(need therapy sewing time - this snow is doing me in) not to mention the very sad 100+ car pile up that happened on the PA turnpike today just by our home turnpike entrance...
ReplyDeleteWell, hubby was coming off nights, so I watched the Olympics and quilted. Today tho we are heading out on a road trip. Three cars of family!
ReplyDeleteHubby gave me a gift certificate to my LQS (he's a sweetie) and took me out to dinner! Love love love him every day of the year. Rcoyle at olemiss dot edu.
ReplyDeleteI spent the day sewing and eating chocolate covered cherries my husband gave me for Valentine's Day!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous pillow! I have been saving selvedges for a while now and hope to have enough to make a quilt some day, so yours would be VERY welcome.
ReplyDeleteI celebrated Valentine's Day by having an endoscopy this morning and then napping on the couch most of the rest of the day. My husband got me a lovely bouquet of tulips and is in charge of dinner since I'm not allowed to cook for 24 hours. Tee hee. I have a feeling we will be having pizza since he hates to cook! We usually go out to dinner the week after when the restaurants aren't so packed so I still have something to look forward to.
We had a very quiet day- got my hair done and some PT-very quiet!!
ReplyDeleteI spent the day with my grandson. He told me today that since my husband his grandpa passed away in Dec that I was going to be his special Valentine today. He is 18 and has a girlfriend but he spent the day with me and tonight with his girlfriend.
ReplyDeleteYour selvedge pillow is lovely! It is so much fun working with these special scraps! Valentines Day included having a lovely dinner with my son who I don't get to see that often. Perfect!
ReplyDeleteLove your big pillow! I've been working with selveges too recently, and made a couple of bright and colourful placemats for our breakfast table. And yes, I'd love to win some more exciting selvedge strips!
ReplyDeleteAs for celebrating Valentiné's Day - well, we had planned a nice lunch. But sadly, we had a funeral to attend instead. So sad, losing a good friend.
That pillow is awesome. I need to start using up my selvages but I wouldn't turn down yours! I made a fancy dinner and we spent the night at home.
ReplyDeleteSince I'm living on my college campus I didn't see my parents and I don't have a significant other, but I had some ice cream with my brother while watching some college basketball so it was still a good day. Thank you for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteLove the pillow. I've wanted to do a selvage something but don't have a large variety. Thanks for the chance to win. I didn't Valentine's day at work and then went to a block of the month class tonight. Such a fun Valentine's for me. ;)
ReplyDeletevisiting you from crazy mum quilts. I love selvedge work and this is fantastic. Put together so well.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful cushion - that will have to go on my 'must do' list. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy husband surprised me at my concert by getting a friend to cover the start of his night shift. We shared chocolate mousse and raspberries. Quite a delightful evening. Thanks for the chance to win your selvedges. I'm new in quilting, so I have none and I have so many ideas for them!
ReplyDeleteLOVE your pillow ! Had to go to the dermatologist, then shopping !
ReplyDeleteYour pillow is so pretty! I saved my selvages in the past and gave to my friend who makes bags with them. I had intended to make something with them so this would be a ready made selvage stash. Thanks! Since I'm a widow, I celebrated valentine's day with my son..dinner at a Mexican restaurant.
ReplyDeleteLove this pillow and would like to make one of my own. I have some selvages, but not enough. Thanks for the chance to win more. I spent the night with my daughter getting caught up on old shows on our DVR.
ReplyDeleteWe took my MIL whose is 88 yr to dinner at the local diner. Otherwise same ole day as every other day.
ReplyDeleteMy husband took me to the fabric store and he bought me a new Ott floor lamp. It may not be the most romantic item, but I sure do love it and him! It is the thought that counts. And after 41 years, he knows what I want.
ReplyDeleteYou did a nice job on the pillow! I love making pillows so it caught my attention. I didn't do too much, this week I had made a number of fabric flower accessories to give out to some disadvantaged women and teens. I had a few more to do, so I finished them up and wrapped them. Today I'm giving the rest out before the storm!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I celebrated early - on Tuesday. It began with breakfast out, then a little wandering thru Target and then to Fresh Market and Marshall's. Next was lunch at a little wine shop that serves light meals. Our penultimate stop was the movie Monuments Men and finally we had a yogurt snack after the movie. It was a great day and we avoided the crowds.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pillow! For valentines we celebrated with a special meal. Every day should be valentines day!
ReplyDeleteFabulous cushion!
ReplyDeleteI went out for a meal with my gorgeous husband of 27 years!
Hubby and I shared his home-made taco dinner and heart-shaped brownie dessert with his mom and sister... both have been widowed for a number of years. It was fun to get together and share some laughs!
ReplyDeleteWe actually had a family dinner with my in-laws and cousins. Perhaps we'll have a more intimate date night this week. We really prefer to avoid the crowded restaurants on Valentine's Day.
ReplyDeleteThat box looks yummy! I haven't been sewing long enough to have near that many selvages. I would love to win that box and makea cute pillow like yours.
ReplyDeleteLovely pillow! We had a mellow day at home for Valentines Day. Cooked in and watched movies!
ReplyDeleteIt looks so good and I love pillows! I celebrated the Valentines Day with my friends and we were playing cards.
ReplyDeleteEdit from Hungary
After work, I got a new haircut and color. Then spent Sat w/the my best scrapbooking friends at our local store on the last day their were open, it was sad, but lots of laughing occurred. Now back to quilting today!
ReplyDeleteSince my valentine was attending a wedding out of town, I spent it working and then enjoying a quiet evening at home cooking my favorite meal and reading a book. It was a completely luxurious evening of relaxing. Hope you're was terrific also.
ReplyDeleteI love that cushion! What a great way to prevent wasting any fabric, and it's pretty as well.
ReplyDeleteThis year was the best Valentine's Day I can ever remember having. I went and visited my mother, my sister and brother-in-law took us out for lunch, my kids and husband all gave me chocolate, and then my husband took me out for dinner! All in the same day! Amazing. :)

ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome pillow! It indeed makes that part of the room "A Bright Corner!" I've been saving selvages for a couple months, ever since I started seeing great selvage projects, but it will take me a long long time to have enough to do anything with. Thanks for the chance to win, and thanks for the inspiration. On Valentines day I had a nice lunch with two friends from work, and spent the evening at home with my husband and our cats. It was a good day!
ReplyDeleteI don't often enter give aways, but I love your pillow. As a new quilter, my collection of selvages is quite small. As for Valentines day, my husband and I went out to eat ( barbecue ) and then I pulled fabric for a quilt that I am making.
ReplyDeleteLove your pillow!! There are so many cool ideas for using selvages. I need to sew more so I can save more. For Valentine's Day I went to my daughter's swim meet ... but roses (for me) and candy (for her) were waiting for us when we arrived home. Thank you for a chance at your generous and exciting giveaway!
ReplyDeleteGREAT Giveaway! My daughter uses selvages a lot, so I'm always collecting them for her. To celebrate: well the hubs had total knee replacement surgery…so…I grabbed some Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey and we split it! Way back we'd eat Wavy Gravy, BUT I couldn't find any of that kind. Thanks Andy, LOVE the pillow.
ReplyDeleteYour pillow is beautiful! Valentines Day we had a movie night with the kiddos and the 15th we got a babysitter for almost the whole day and we went out and ate good food all by ourselves! It was so fun.
ReplyDeleteLove the selvedge pillow! Spent Valentine's Day with my grandchildren as hubby was working a 24 hour shift! We made dinner together, played video games and watched Frozen, oh yea, and had CHOCOLATE! Thank you for the give away!

ReplyDeleteI would absolutely LOVE to win the selvages!
ReplyDeleteI cooked a nice dinner for my husband and then, I began prepping a whole cloth crib quilt for a baby granddaughter due in May. Nothing too exciting but I couldn't have asked for a better way to end my day. :-)
