Fast Track Quilt in Golden Hour Fabrics

I've made a few different versions of the Fast Track quilt pattern but this one is definitely at the top of my list of favorites! And I thought this one deserved to be photographed out in the pretty fall colors at one of our local parks.

Fast Track pattern

A friend of mine helped me name this pattern and it truly is a fast one to make.

Fast Track is a pre-cut friendly pattern that has a modern look to it, but really suits any fabric that you use - even solids and scraps.

If you've seen my previous versions of Fast Track you might notice that something is a little different with this one. Usually the quilt is ALL prints - no background or white solid fabric.

But I wanted to show what it looks like when you add in a background fabric. This is a great trick when you want to make a Fast Track quilt but you only have a certain number of prints, or a smaller FQ bundle.

In my case I needed 18 FQ (for the throw size) but I only had 9. So I cut the remaining needed strips from some Moda Bella 97. As I stitched the blocks I made sure to alternate the background strips with the print strips.
(both paper copies and PDF options available)

Use Jelly Roll strips, Layer Cake squares, Fat Quarters, or Yardage

I love to give as many fabric options as possible and this pattern pretty much allows anything.

My favorite is to use Jelly Roll strips because most of the cutting is already done for you. However if you want a bit more control over which prints are in the quilt then fat quarters are my second favorite option.

As I mentioned above, I used a FQ bundle for this Golden Hour version.

Four Size Options

This version of Fast Track is the throw size (61" x 70") but the pattern includes instructions and diagrams to make four sizes:

crib quilt: 44" x 53"

lap quilt: 53" x 61"

throw quilt: 61' x 70"

twin quilt: 70" x 79"

Golden Hour Fabrics

One thing that drew me to these Golden Hour prints was the unique color combo. I try to push myself outside of my normal go-to colors every once in awhile and this bundle did that for me. I wasn't a big fan of the rust color at first but the more I worked with it the more I loved it - particularly when paired with the purple. Which surprised me!

And it was a tough choice for what to use as the contrasting print. The navy was too bold and the yellow was too....yellow. The light blue print was actually my third choice but I really love it! Because there are no other lighter blue prints in the FQ bundle it worked great as the contrasting print. It stands alone without drawing too much attention away from the other prints.

Golden Hour is designed by Alexia Abegg for Ruby Star Society. You can still find some FQ bundles on Etsy here and at the Fat Quarter Shop here, but it is becoming hard to find!

Finishing Details

For the backing I found a coordinating solid in a lovely golden yellow at my local quilt shop.

I quilted it using a computerized edge-to-edge design called Loopy Loops (designed by Julie Hirt and purchased on Etsy).

The binding fabric was a tough choice for me this time! I first considered binding it in the same light blue print that I used for the contrast print but it wasn't as bold as I felt it should be. I went with one of the navy prints from the fabric line in the end- it still has some of the light blue in it, but it's a little darker of a print and helps to frame up the quilt.
