Dinner Party Quilt in Cozy Up Fabrics

I have a problem with Layer Cakes (a.k.a. precut 10" squares). My problem is that I love to buy them but often can't decide what to make with them. So they sit there.

I even have a cute bin to "display" these Layer Cakes. But really...I'd rather put them to good use and sew them up into a quilt!

So my goal for the past couple of years has been to focus on designing patterns that specifically use those pretty 10" squares that we all love.

Last year I released this pattern, Dinner Party. It uses Layer Cake squares, but there are also instructions for fat quarters or 1/3 yard cuts - if you prefer those.

This pattern is great for showing off medium- and large-scale prints like the ones in this Cozy Up fabric line. (Cozy Up was designed by Corey Yoder for Moda Fabrics - you can find Cozy Up Layer Cakes here from the Fat Quarter Shop)

Cozy Up was a nice fit for this pattern with the large florals and those fun large gingham prints -- which I HAD to include in my quilt.

The Dinner Party pattern includes instructions for four sizes of quilts:
    - Crib (45" x 58")
    - Throw (58" x 72")
    - Twin (72" x 85")
    - Queen (99" x 99")

This is the throw size quilt which only uses 20 squares from the pack but still makes a large throw size (58" x 72"). Yep - that means you can get two throw size quilts from one pack of Layer Cake squares. Nice!

With these pretty, fall-inspired colors I knew this quilt would be used in cooler weather so I backed it with a charcoal gray minky.

And I kept the quilting simple with some large loops. The computerized longarm design is called Wishbone and I found it through the Longarm League shop here

  1. Am looking forward to a book as great as Fresh Fat Quarters for 10" squares. I want to make every quilt in Fresh Fat Quarters and I certainly have the 10" squares to do the same

  2. The quilt is very pretty..(I just found you today thanks to A Quilting Life blogpost and your lovely Charming Lucy post. I'm picturing Dinner Party in an assortment of other colors and they are all very nice. I'll admit I am a bit disappointed that there was no photo of your collection of layer cakes...lol....I, too, am addicted to them but can't bear to cut them up without knowing the PERFECT pattern. They just look so doggone pretty....and I wondered how other display...er, I mean store theirs. Blessings from West Virginia!
