Fast & Fun Lap Quilts Book

Hey there - I have a finished quilt, a new book, AND a giveaway to share with you all today!

My friend Melissa Corry has written a new book called Fast & Fun Lap Quilts and I'm delighted to be a part of the book tour.

Dutch Days quilt made by Andy Knowlton found on A Bright Corner quilt blog

Confession time: I own all of Melissa's previous books (I'm a big fan) and I really like her style. She's a talented designer who has a knack for designing quilts that look complicated but really aren't.

Quilts from the Fast and Fun Lap Quilts book found on A Bright Corner quilt blog

There are 9 total quilt patterns in this book, and all can be made using a single Layer Cake (a pack of precut 10" squares). If you're a quilter that loves sewing with Layer Cakes, this book will be a great resource for you!

The Fast & Fun Lap Quilts book is available now - ask your local shop about it, or you can find a copy here on Amazon and here from the Fat Quarter Shop. If you'd like a signed copy, Melissa has some in her shop!

I used the Dutch Days pattern to make my quilt. You'd think by looking at it that there must have been a lot of half square triangles to make and square up but there were none!

Melissa designed a really clever way to piece these blocks and I enjoyed making them. They're nice, large blocks - 16" x 16" and the quilt needs 16 blocks.

The finished quilt is a generous size: 72" x 72"

For my quilt I used a Layer Cake of Songbook A New Page fabrics designed by Fancy That Design House & Co. for Moda Fabrics. I love the rich, fall-inspired colors in this fabric line! They're so perfect for this time of year, and they worked really well with this quilt pattern.

For the background fabric I used Moda Bella 285 - it's a lovely off-white that goes so well with these prints.

I wanted this quilt to be a cozy one so I backed it in a camel-colored minky fabric. I love the weight of minky-backed quilts, don't you?

The binding fabric is one of the teal prints from the Songbook A New Page fabric line. (You can see it better in the photo above.)

The Songbook A New Page precuts are available now in shops, and the yardage should be arriving soon!

  2. What a beautiful quilt, Andy - and you had me with 'no HST's to trim' :)! The block does look like there are a lot of HST's in there to trim. Love, love the backing you chose for this quilt. The first quilt I would make from this book is - Three in a Row, then I would try the pattern you chose.

  182. Well....I love the fabric and the Dutch Days pattern! Especially if the half-square triangles don't need much trimming! The Songbook designs are just wonderful.
