A Scrappy Heart Quilt

A few months ago I shared a free block tutorial called the Build A Heart block.

This last week I finished my throw size quilt made using different variations of the block and I thought you'd like to see!

The Build A Heart pattern is a fun way to use up scraps - each half of a heart uses a 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangle.

My pink and red scrap bins were overflowing so I had no problem finding enough scraps to make a throw size version! In fact, I probably should have kept going and made a bigger quilt to help use up even more scraps.

I know they're hearts - and the first thought is to reach for pink or red prints but you could just as easily use any color - or ALL the colors! My blue and green bins are currently my fullest ones so I think I'll use them in my next version of this quilt.

I also went totally scrappy for the background fabrics in this quilt - you can see more details of the prints I used in the photo below.

When you make your quilt, if you'd prefer to use a single background fabric you'll need 3 1/4 yards total for the background. (The PDF pattern has the cutting instructions for using a single background fabric.)

This throw size quilt measures 48" x 60" and I made a total of 20 blocks.

The pattern includes seven different variations of the Build A Heart block. It's fun to make a mix of the seven different versions and then play with the layout. Each quilt you make will be unique!

For the backing on my quilt I used a pink solid fabric and the binding is a coordinating pink print that I had in my stash.

The quilting is a computerized longarm design called Scribble Hearts by 627 Handworks.

You can find the free block tutorial here. It takes you step by step through how to make a block with plenty of photos to help.

The PDF pattern also includes:
  • instructions for seven variations of the block
  • instructions for making this throw size quilt
  • a handy chart for making other sizes of the quilt (crib, throw, large throw, twin, and queen)
  • plus some full-color mock ups to get your creative juices flowing

I'm determined to use up more of my scraps this year so this is just the first of several scrappy quilts that I'll be sharing over the next few months. If you make a Build A Heart quilt or blocks I'd love to see them!

  1. Your PDF lists the measurements for different sizes (crib through queen), but it says the queen is 36x48, which is also the crib size. Can you tell me what the measurements for the queen size really are? Thank you!

    1. Good catch! It should say 108" x 108" - thanks for letting me know about the error Lori!
