Clear Sky Quilt in Kona Solids

Today I'm sharing a version of the Clear Sky quilt sewn in Kona cotton solids. These colors have been one of my favorite combos lately!

The Clear Sky pattern is a fun star sampler quilt - there are eight different blocks and if you love star blocks (like I do) then you'll love this pattern.

It also has instructions for making a scrappy version, which is my favorite way to make a Clear Sky quilt.

I actually finished this quilt up in December, but didn't get the chance to take photos of it until now.

I made most of these blocks as a part of the Clear Sky quilt along that we did back in Summer 2021, and then the project got put on a shelf (and honestly forgotten about!)

Last year one of my local quilt shops used my Clear Sky pattern for a block of the month program and invited me to come to the last meeting and share my different versions of Clear Sky and talk about some behind-the-scenes-juicy-details of this pattern.

That was a great motivator for me to finally get this all-solids version finished up so I could share it at the meeting!

Kona + Moda Grunge

Like I mentioned above, this color combo is a current favorite of mine. I started with the dark green, teal, berry, and gold colors. Then I found a lighter version of each color to pair with the darker one in each block.

Because sometimes an all-solids quilt can look a little flat, I wanted to bring in some personality with the background fabric. I used a Moda Grunge fabric with a little gray in it and I love how it works so well with the Kona solids.

There are many different Moda Grunge colors - this one is called Metropolis Fog.

The Kona colors used are: Teal, Fog, Palm, Celadon, Butterscotch, Mustard, Plum, Foxglove, Steel, and Iron.

Longarm Quilting

I did the quilting myself, and it's a longarm computerized design called Brick Wall. I recently discovered a couple of new longarm designers and it's been fun to try out some new-to-me designs.

I love this Brick Wall design because it's a clean, modern quilting design that provides great texture without drawing any attention away from the blocks and the fabric. It was designed by Ambling Vines and can be found here through Ma Tante Quilting.

Binding & Backing

I was tempted to add a fun floral print binding but I wasn't able to find one that I LOVED, so I went with a solid. I used Kona Teal which worked out great because I had just enough in my stash and didn't have to make a trip to the store. Love when that happens!

For the backing I used Kona Fog.

  1. The combo of solids with the grunge background is amazing! I'd also love to know how you got it to hang so flat against the wall!

    1. Brown packing tape! Usually just some loops along the top edge do the trick, but sometimes I also need to a loop or two on the sides and bottom corners. :)
