Today I'm sharing a throw size version of the Make Believe quilt pattern that I stitched up earlier this year. Make Believe is a fun and modern quilt pattern that's perfect for using precut 10" squares (layer cake squares.)
For this version of Make Believe I used a fabric line called Mabon, designed by Shelley Cavanna for Contempo fabrics by Benartex. I love the bold, saturated colors that Shelley does so well in all of her lines.
I bought this particular pack of 10" squares years ago (2020 I think?) intending to make a Dinner Party quilt but then never got around to it...that happens sometimes right?
But as I was writing up the Make Believe pattern I wanted to make a few test versions of it and I spotted the pack in my stash and knew these prints would be perfect!
The throw size Make Believe quilt uses all 42 of the 10" squares so there's no waste. It worked really well with this particular line because this pack of 10" squares didn't have any whites or super low-volume prints. They were all these beautiful, saturated colors.
They do a great job of showing off this pattern!
The Make Believe pattern gives you the option of adding the little "holes" in the center of each block - I chose to add them this time but it's easy to omit them if you choose.
Make Believe also has several fabric options - you can use charm squares (5"), layer cake squares (10"), fat quarters, or yardage (1/3 yard cuts).
And the pattern also has lots of size options included in the instructions:
- crib 46" x 56"
- lap 56" x 67"
- throw 67" x 77"
- twin 77" x 98"
- queen 109" x 109"
This is the throw size and it finished at 67" x 77"
I quilted this one using my Handi Quilter longarm and used a digital edge to edge design called Triplet. It's a new-to-me design and I really like how it stitched up.
It's not exactly a loop and not exactly a floral but is a nice mix of both and isn't too dense. I wanted some movement in the quilting without overpowering the fabrics and I'm happy with the result!
For the backing I used a coordinating solid fabric that I found at my local quilt shop.
The binding is one of the blue prints from the Mabon line. And I'm so glad that I had the foresight to buy the binding fabric at the same time that I bought the pack of 10" squares...especially since the fabric is really hard to find now!

And you can find copies of Make Believe here in my shop. There are both paper copies and PDF instant download copies available.

Andy, I look at your blog frequently, with admiration of course.
ReplyDeleteThis past 10 years I have spend my quilting journey right beside caring for both of my parents, Mom went to Heaven in 2016, and dear daddy, two weeks ago, at age 99 and a half. I have made a lot of quilts, and I have a lot of fabric. I hope to make some of these gems like you. each quilt I made (even some unfinished ones) have memories that my hubbs and me have made over the years, helping my old peeps.
All good memories.
I have two siblings that are kind of horrible but I have been brave the past few weeks.
