Prime Time Quilt Pattern

I'd like to introduce you to the Prime Time quilt pattern! It's a fun, precut friendly pattern with two block options included.

Prime Time is a great way to use Layer Cake squares, but you also have the option of using Charm squares, Fat Quarters, or yardage. And it works with any fabric - florals, geometrics, batiks and even solids. It's really versatile! It would even make a fun I-Spy style quilt with fussy cut fabrics in each block.

If you regularly read my blog then you've already seen a throw size version of Prime Time that I made back in March as I was first working on this pattern.

This one I'm sharing today is the twin size which finishes at 71" x 88" and uses a pack of precut 10" squares (Layer Cake). Technically it uses less than a full Layer Cake pack - which allows for you to be able to pull out a few prints that might not contrast enough with the background.

The Prime Time pattern has instructions and diagrams for making a total of four sizes of quilts:

  • Baby (53" x 53")
  • Throw (53" x 71")
  • Twin (71" x 88")
  • Queen (106" x 106")

The two different block options in the pattern are a four patch block or a large square block variation. The large square block option (see below) is fairly quick to piece and it's become my favorite way to use a Layer Cake!

This is a digital mock up of the large square block variation in the same Forget Me Not fabrics that I used in the finished quilt I'm sharing today:

The large square block version would be perfect for showcasing your favorite medium- and large-scale fabrics. And to make the construction even faster, I added in some quick strip piecing as well.

You can find both paper copies and PDF (instant download) copies of the Prime Time pattern in my shop, and quilt shops can order from their preferred distributor.

For this particular quilt I used a pack of precut 10" squares from the Forget Me Not fabric line designed by Allison Harris (Cluck Cluck Sew) for Windham fabrics.

For the contrast fabric I used a yellow print from the Treasured Threads fabric line by Amber Johnson for Poppie Cotton fabric. It was the perfect yellow to complement the prints in the Forget Me Not line!

I quilted this with my Handi Quilter Fusion and the digital edge to edge design I used is called Lace Loops by Sew Shabby Quilting. It's a cool loop design that's a new one for me but I really like it!

  1. I have the center of the quilt finished and I can't find any instructions regarding the border.

  2. Hi there - the "border" is built in to the quilt design. There is no actual border that is sewn on.

  3. Is this an easy pattern for a beginner?
