Introducing the Mod Mugs quilt pattern - a precut friendly quilt pattern with four size options. I love this cozy, wintery version sewn up in Winterglow fabrics by Ruby Star Society.
Mod Mugs is a modern and fun, traditionally pieced pattern - meaning there's no paper piecing or templates needed - just basic piecing skills.
I wanted to create a no-fuss Mug quilt that could be customized with different fabrics and optional whip cream topping. I kept the size of the mugs big enough so you could show off your favorite medium and large scale prints. Or fussy cut some favorites too!
Mod Mugs is precut friendly
To make a Mod Mugs quilt you can use:
- Layer Cake squares (precut 10" squares)
- Fat Eighths
- Fat Quarters
- Yardage (1/4 yard cuts)
I like to give as many fabric options and sizes as I can in each pattern, and honestly sometimes it just comes down to how many I can fit into the booklet.
Four Size Options
There are four size options in the Mod Mugs pattern- wall hanging, lap size, throw size, and twin size.
The Wall Hanging size is large enough to also use for a baby size quilt, or you could use it as a large table topper as well.
- Wall Hanging (44" x 44")
- Lap (56" x 68")
- Throw (68" x 80")
- Twin (80" x 92")
Ruby Star Society Winterglow Fabric
This version of the Mod Mugs quilt is the throw size and I used fat eighths from the Winterglow fabric line by Ruby Star Society.
A fat eighth is a cut of fabric that is 9" x 22". Sometimes you can find a fat eighth bundle from a particular fabric line that is created and bundled by the fabric manufacturer. As an alternative you can create your own by cutting a 9" x 22" section from a fat quarter (half of a FQ), or cut from yardage.
For this quilt I had a fat quarter bundle of Winterglow and I just cut my own fat eighths from that bundle.
The background fabric I used is a Moda Bella Solid called Admiral Blue.
I love how the Winterglow fabrics just pop against the darker background!
For the backing I used the same Moda Bella solid that I used for the background. Pretty boring choice, I know! But it was what I had on hand at the time.
The binding fabric is one of the prints from the Winterglow fabric line, and the quilting is a computerized edge-to-edge design called Two Simple.
It's a great one for creating some texture, without drawing too much attention away from the fabrics and the blocks. I use this one a lot!
Mod Mugs Blocks Variations
When I was testing this pattern idea I played around with a whip cream topping on the mugs. I loved it, but also really just loved the plain mug block by itself....so I made the whip cream topper an optional add-on to each block.
Because it's optional you can add the whip cream to just one block, a few blocks, or all of the blocks - whatever you prefer!
You can find both PDF and paper copies of the Mod Mugs pattern in my shop.
