I'm excited to be able to share the new Runway quilt pattern with you today!

The Runway quilt pattern is the newest pattern by Andy Knowlton of A Bright Corner. Runway is precut friendly and is a fast and easy quilt pattern. Includes seven size options and five fabric options.

Runway is a quick and easy, precut friendly pattern that includes five fabric options and seven size options - so it's super versatile! And the pattern uses quick piecing techniques to make this quilt sew up fast.

Runway was originally designed for Quilter's World magazine as a quick and easy Jelly Roll pattern. I made that first sample in just one day, but ever since then I've wanted to go back and revisit the design.

I really wanted to add a bit more visual interest to the design, as well as including more size options and fabric options of course. So the new Runway pattern was born!

Runway is Precut Friendly

The original Runway pattern used a Jelly Roll but for this updated version I added four more options. To make a Runway quilt you can use:

  • Precut 2 1/2" strips (Jelly Rolls)
  • Precut 10" squares (Layer Cakes)
  • Fat Eighths
  • Fat Quarters
  • Yardage (1/4 yard cuts)

The fastest way to make a Runway quilt is using precut 2 1/2" strips since most of the cutting is done already!

But using fat eighths is probably my favorite way to make a Runway quilt since you can mix and match prints and colors from several different fabric lines and really customize your own unique quilt.

Pattern Size Options

The Runway pattern has a whopping seven sizes included. I was delighted to be able to fit that many into the pattern booklet!

  • Baby: 40" x 47.5"
  • Crib: 48" x 57"
  • Lap: 56" x 66.5"
  • Throw: 64" x 80.75"
  • Twin: 72" x 90.25"
  • Queen: 96" x 104.5"
  • King: 112" x 114"

This quilt in the photos is the throw size and I used 16 fat quarters to make this quilt.

If you want to use a Jelly Roll or a Layer Cake, the best size to make is a lap size. It uses almost the entire pack of precuts, with a few to spare...which works out great because sometimes there are a few prints that would blend a little too much with the background fabric. I like to pull those out and toss them in my scrap bin for later.

Albion Fabrics by Amy Smart

For this quilt I used fabrics from the Albion fabric line, designed by Amy Smart for Riley Blake Designs.

I really love the soft, muted colors in this line and they're just SO lovely all together! The wildflower floral print is my absolute favorite but this line has such a great variety of blender prints too. And Amy included several low volume prints in the line as well, which I didn't use in this quilt but I've added to my stash to use in another project.

The background fabric is Moda Bella 200 (color is "off white"), but Confetti Cotton solid in Cloud from Riley Blake Designs also goes beautifully with the Albion fabric line.

For the backing fabric I used a coordinating solid that is a soft yellow. The binding fabric is the blue stripe from Albion.

Longarm Quilting

For the quilting on this quilt I used a computerized longarm design called Sprig. It's a fun take on a standard loop design and I thought it went really well with the wildflower theme of the fabrics.
