Lately I've been working on updating one of my older patterns, and I'm happy to be able to share the new Skipper pattern with you today
The Skipper pattern was first released back in 2017 as a fat quarter pattern with a unique star block.
This fun Skipper star block came to be when I was playing around with my Division pattern and wanted to take some of those elements and apply them to a star block....and Skipper was born.
Several years ago I had a shop owner comment to me how the Skipper pattern would work really well with Jelly Roll strips or Layer Cake squares and ever since then I've wanted to add in those options!
Skipper is precut friendly
This new, updated Skipper pattern can be made with:
- Precut 2 1/2" strips (Jelly Rolls)
- Precut 10" squares (Layer Cakes)
- Fat eighths
- Fat quarters
- Yardage (1/4 yard cuts)
In addition to some new fabric options, the Skipper pattern is now a full-color booklet style pattern. The PDF file is still printer friendly and is full-color now as well. Of course, you can always choose to print it in grayscale if you prefer!
Four Size Options
This new sample quilt in the photos is the throw size Skipper which measures 58.5" x 72.5". The pattern includes instructions for four total sizes of quilts:
- Crib: 44.5" x 58.5"
- Throw: 58.5" x 72.5"
- Twin: 72.5" x 86.5"
- Queen: 86.5" x 86.5"
If you're looking to make a quilt with just one pack of precuts (either Jelly Roll strips or Layer Cake squares) the throw sized Skipper is the best option.
You'll need either 30 strips or squares and since most packs come with at least 40, that gives you some wiggle room in case some of the prints are not enough of a contrast to your background fabric...or in case some prints in the pack are just not your favorite :)
Always in Season fabrics
The quilt in the photos is made using prints from a fabric line called Always in Season designed by American Jane for Riley Blake Designs.
The background fabric is Moda Bella 98 - my go-to background when I need a good white solid. I try to keep a bolt of it on hand because I use it so often. And if you can find the bolt on sale then it makes the cost per yard even less. Sweet!
For the binding I used one of the prints from the Always in Season line. The backing is a Moda Bella solid that I found at my local quilt shop, and the color is Breeze.
Longarm Quilting
I used my Handi Quilter Fusion to quilt this Skipper quilt and I chose a design called Easy Orange Peel. It's a computerized edge-to-edge design and it always stitches up beautifully.
You know, sometimes I have a hard time choosing how to quilt a quilt. Like, a REALLY hard time. And I end up spending way to long looking at all of my options. There are some really great quilting designs out there these days.
The updated Skipper pattern is in my pattern shop, and you can choose between a PDF (downloadable) pattern or a paper pattern.
