Today I'm sharing another version of the Top Notch quilt pattern - this is the Ruby Star Society Reverie Top Notch quilt.
Reverie is a new line (heading to quilt shops in October!) from Ruby Star Society designed by Melody Miller. It has a beautiful combination of warm and cool prints and for this quilt I chose to mix both together in one quilt.
Top Notch patterns are available in my shop here
Top Notch is Precut Friendly
For this quilt I used a Layer Cake of Reverie. The lap size version uses 40 (10") squares and since a Layer Cake includes 42 squares it allowed me to pull out a couple of the lightest prints.
I wanted to have a nice contrast between the prints and the solid white I used for the "notches."
All sizes of the Top Notch quilt have the option for using Layer Cake squares, but there's also the option of using Fat Quarters or yardage (1/3 yard cuts).
See a version of Top Notch made with Fat Quarters here
Four Size Options
This quilt is the lap sized Top Notch which finishes at 47.5" x 60.5". You could also consider this a small throw size. I prefer my "throw" quilts to be a generous size so I like to call this smaller size more of a "lap" size quilt. It would work for a child's quilt, or a quilt to keep over the arm of your sofa for use on chilly evenings while watching tv.
The pattern also includes instructions for:
- Crib size (35" x 47.5")
- Throw size (60.5" x 73")
- and Twin size (73" x 86")
Great for Medium and Large-Scale prints
One thing I love about this Reverie line are the large floral prints. Top Notch is a great pattern for using larger scale prints because you don't need to cut them up - use them in these larger blocks and let them shine!
For the quilting on this one I used a new-to-me computerized design called Belly Bop. It's sort of a sketchy loop design.
I love using loops for quilting and this one has a more organic look to it instead of the more geometric and symmetrical loops that I usually go for. It works really well with these fabrics, and I love the end result!
The binding I used on this quilt is one of the Ruby Star basics called Spark and this color is Mermaid. For the contrasting fabric (used on the "notches") I used Moda Bella 97. It's one of my favorite whites and I always keep a bolt on hand.
There are copies of Top Notch in my shop - both PDF (instant download) and paper copies are available. Shops can order Top Notch through distributors.
