Today I'm sharing a fast and fun lap size version of the Top Notch quilt pattern.
Top Notch is one of my favorite ways to use Layer Cake squares. There's minimal cutting and the blocks are quick to piece. And the throw size Top Notch uses 40 (10") squares, so there's very little waste.
I had a Layer Cake of Country Rose fabric (designed by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics) and I wanted to use it in a pattern that allowed me to use the whole Layer Cake. I love this whole line all together - which is not always the case with fabric lines.
Top Notch patterns are available in my shop here
Both PDF (instant download) and paper copies are available
This is the lap size quilt which finished at about 47" x 60" - long enough to lay across my lap while I'm reading or watching tv but not so huge that it hangs on the floor or is too bulky to carry from room to room.
The pattern also includes instructions for crib, throw, and twin size quilts as well.
For the contrasting fabric (I can't really call it "background" in this pattern can I?) I used Moda Bella 98. It's a nice, crisp white solid and one of my go-to favorites for background fabrics.
If you're a shop owner, the Top Notch lap size is an easy one to kit, with one Layer Cake pack plus 1 yard of contrasting fabric.
For the backing I used a green minky fabric that I found at my local quilt shop. While I don't always love working with minky, I sure do love how warm the finished quilt is, and how soft and drapey it is.
For the quilting I used a computerized quilting design called Fat Loops, and the binding fabric is the black text print from the Country Rose fabric line.
